LAURA McLachlan is making her debut at the Field of Women event this Saturday as a friend and supporter.
The wife of new AFL chief executive Gillon McLachlan will step onto the MCG with her three close friends — Melissa Peters, Pennie Callaghan and Sarah Ridley — who have all been touched by breast cancer.
“We’ve all been affected, some more closely than the others,” McLachlan said.
“Everyone has had a mother or a friend who’s been affected or watched them either win the battle or lose the battle.
“So it’s a really important weekend for women and women involved in football, but also anyone who’s interested in football and to come along and support the game and also support the cause.
“It’s such a striking image seeing all those women on the MCG dressed in pink and I think the image itself is very powerful.”
Saturday’s Field of Women, before the Melbourne v Western Bulldogs game, will see 15,000 people on the MCG in the shape of a pink lady.
Its aim is to raise funds and awareness for Breast Cancer Network Australia.
The mother-of-three said life had already changed as football’s first lady, but she welcomes what lies ahead.
“It has (changed) a little bit but not too dramatically. I’m sure it will, we’ll take that as it comes.
“It’s exciting for him, he’s worked very hard and we’re very proud.
“He’ll be there this weekend doing his thing and I’ll be there with the girls doing mine.”
