40th Annual People's Choice Awards

Model/actress Heidi Klum is one of Victoria Secret’s most successful former angels.  She rose to mainstream fame after appearing on the cover of Sports Illustrated’s popular Swimsuit Issue in 1998. In an interview, Klum reflected on her early days in the modeling industry and remembered a time when she couldn’t even afford clothes for photo shoots and “was calling friends and asking ‘Can I borrow this? Can I borrow that?'” But, by 2007, Klum was one of the modeling industry’s highest paid models and in 2008 she earned an estimated $16 million.  However, Klum’s career has since expanded beyond modeling and she has pursued several other business ventures throughout the years.  Klum has released two fragrances, and Klum also released a line of maternity clothing after her own experiences while pregnant.  Klum stated: “I experienced fashion challenges during my four pregnancies and combined my knowledge of what works in terms of style, comfort and practicality to create these lines”

In 2010 it was announced that her and then husband, Seal, would be featured in a reality show on Lifetime.  At the time, a source close to Klum said, “After getting positive feedback from family and friends, they decided they wanted to help others share the same kinds of special moments…For example, they want to help people who didn’t have their dream wedding the first time around to get a second chance.” However, the show never ended up airing and the couple divorced two years later.

Klum’s split from Seal marked her second divorce, and caused the public to speculate on what caused the seemingly happy couple’s relationship to end.  However, even through many of Klum’s most public personal struggles, she has maintained a positive attitude and seems to have some words of wisdom many people could benefit from.  Here are five Heidi Klum quotes we could all learn from.

5.  “I think it’s important to get your surroundings as well as yourself into a positive state – meaning surround yourself with positive people, not the kind who are negative and jealous of everything you do.”

Life is full of people who don’t want to see others succeed, and sometimes, those closest to you are the ones who are secretly hoping for your downfall.  However, Klum suggests that positivity is one of the main ingredients to happiness, and she urges people to  surround themselves with as much positive and genuine energy as possible.

4. “I’m not saying that everyone should swim with sharks, but sometimes you have to jump over your own shadow in order to learn something that you will never forget for the rest of your life. Then you know you can conquer your fears.”

Although swimming with sharks probably isn’t the best idea for even the most fearless people. Klum still provides a little tough love, because after all, there’s certain fears you can only overcome by facing them directly.  Although fear of failure can result in hesitation and doubt, it is important to test ourselves so that we’re aware of our true strength when we actually need to use it.

3. “I think you always need to try your best, but at the same time you can only do what you can do, and you don’t need to beat yourself up about it.”

Although we are all taught to do our best, sometimes those teaching us forget to inform us that sometimes our best simply isn’t good enough.  Giving something your all and still falling short is something that we all have to learn how to accept at one time or another.  Klum suggests that we shouldn’t spend too much time being hard on ourselves and that we should be satisfied with any outcome as long we know we’ve tried our best.

2. “I’ve been heartbroken. I’ve broken hearts. That’s part of life, and its part of figuring out who you are so you can find the right partner.”

Dealing with a broken heart is one of the most difficult things in life, and at some point in time. most people will have to learn how to cope with being on both sides.  Klum herself, is certainly no stranger to heartbreak.  She has been married and divorced twice and her split from R&B singer, Seal received a lot of public attention immediately after the couple released this statement announcing their plans to separate:”While we have enjoyed seven very loving, loyal and happy years of marriage, after much soul-searching we have decided to separate…We have had the deepest respect for one another throughout our relationship and continue to love each other very much, but we have grown apart. This is an amicable process and protecting the well-being of our children remains our top priority, especially during this time of transition. We thank our family, friends, and fans for their kind words of support. And for our children’s sake, we appreciate you respecting our privacy.”

1. “If you are talented, you can really do anything. And if your heart is at the right place and you have the passion for it, you can go for it and do it.”

Klum puts a new spin on the old phrase “you can do anything if you put your mind to it.”  She insists that all it takes is the perfect combination of desire and dedication and anyone can achieve his/her goals.  This mixture of talent and passion is something that Klum herself has become very familiar with during her career as both a model and an actress.
